Galt Area Youth Coalition

Galt Area Youth Coalition

The Community
Galt is in southern Sacramento County, about 30 miles from Sacramento. Although it is the main city in the coalition’s targeted geographic area, the communities of Acampo, Herald and Thornton also are involved. With an estimated population of 28,000, Galt is one of the Central Valley’s fastest-growing communities, and during the past decade the area has become more culturally diverse.

The Coalition
The Galt Area Youth Coalition is a growing partnership formed to create positive opportunities for youth ages 10 to 15 within the boundaries of the Galt Joint Union High School District.

Our vision for the Galt area is one in which:

  • youth will be healthy, well-nourished and physically fit
  • youth will have access to a wide range of educational, cultural and recreational activities
  • youth will have meaningful opportunities for involvement, membership and leadership
  • our schools will prepare youth for adulthood by providing a rigorous and relevant education program with multiple opportunities for high-quality service learning
  • our community will provide safe, affordable and accessible facilities for education, recreation and entertainment
  • our community will provide safe and environmentally friendly options for pedestrian, bicycle and vehicle traffic
  • our community will respect and value ethnic and cultural diversity

Galt makes progress on youth master plan

September 2009

Youth and adults from the Galt Area Youth Coalition and other community members came together on Sept. 17 to give their input on the Galt Youth Master Plan. The interactive community forum included activities to encourage youth and adults to share what they see as the needs for specific age groups. The master plan will guide policy and program decisions in future years, addressing outcomes for youth up to age 24 in five developmental areas: Learning, Working, Thriving, Connecting and Leading.

Galt youth and adults develop youth master plan

August 2009

Working with city and school leadership, youth in Galt are developing the city’s first youth master plan, which will guide policy and program decisions in future years. The master plan will address outcomes for youth up to age 24 in five developmental areas: Learning, Working, Thriving, Connecting and Leading. The Galt Youth Master Plan is a key focus area of the Galt Area Youth Coalition in 2009 and 2010.

Galt Area Youth Coalition Documentary

Small City, Big Problem: What Would You Do About It?
Our documentary looks at the lack of support and opportunities in our community of Galt. Over the years Galt has been in substantial need of safe facilities for youth. We tell this story through the eyes of the youth of Galt and citizens of the town, and show many images of Galt. We interviewed political leaders and got the students’ perspectives. Because this documentary addresses a topic that concerns the community, we believe everyone will be interested in seeing it.

Gaby meetingOn Jan. 21 at the Placerville Town Hall, residents of El Dorado County kicked off the Martin Luther King, Jr. Season for Nonviolence. Two REACH youth ― Spencer Reed, a youth member of the Vision Coalition of El Dorado Hills, and John Johnson, a youth member of the Galt Area Youth Coalition ― performed their slam poetry titled “Diversity” and “Unplugged,” addressing issues of racism and prejudice. The poetry was inspired by their experiences at last summer’s REACH Youth Development Camp at Grizzly Creek Ranch.
