POSITION TITLE: Youth Engagement Leader
ORGANIZATION: Yolo Family Resource Center (YFRC)
POSITION DESCRIPTION: The Youth Engagement Leader works with the Woodland Coalition for Youth (WC4Y), a collaborative of youth and adults representing various youth-serving agencies in Woodland, to create social and educational supports and opportunities and effect communitywide systems change for Woodland youth.
The vision of the WC4Y is that all youth have more voice and choice in positive educational and social connections to be happy, healthy and successful adults. The Youth Engagement Leader, reporting to the Coordinator of Youth Programs, will be involved in shaping the vision and setting the standard for all programs serving youth ages 10-15 per the Sierra Health Foundation REACH grant, but may also work directly with youth outside this age range. The Youth Engagement Leader provides direct staffing support to the Woodland Youth Council (WYC), a group of youth who are engaged in a variety of leadership activities that support their work to address the goals outlined in the WC4Y’s three-year plan.
DUTIES:
Working independently, under the supervision of the Coordinator of Youth Programs, and in collaboration with Yolo Family Resource Center staff and identified community partners and youth services providers, the Youth Engagement Leader will:
1. Support the WYC and the WC4Y at large by:
- facilitating youth leadership in the implementation of the WC4Y’s three-year work plan by ensuring that youth are properly trained and supported to initiate and lead key activities;
- assisting WYC officers in preparing WYC’s weekly agendas;
- transporting and accompanying youth to trainings and special events as needed;
- communicating with parents of WYC members through monthly meetings regarding activities of the WYC and other youth development opportunities that parents can support;
- expanding and diversifying WYC membership;
- participating in and facilitating youth participation at WC4Y meetings;
- attending trainings and meetings related to youth development and implement best practices;
- contributing to the preparation of deliverables by assisting in data collection and reporting on program outcomes.
2. Serve as a mentor and advocate for WYC members, providing them with social and emotional support and monitoring any conditions that affect their involvement in the WYC.
3. Spearhead the WC4Y’s community organizing project to engage youth throughout Woodland in leadership activities and mobilize a network of young people committed to policy change.
4. Conduct outreach activities throughout the community to:
- engage youth in civic activities;
- engage civic organizations and other stakeholders in the WC4Y’s work;
- educate the community on the WC4Y’s youth development agenda.
5. Assist with up to 16 hours of office clean-up/maintenance yearly.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bachelor’s Degree in a human service or related field.*
2. At least two years of experience working directly with youth in providing services or in a teaching/mentoring capacity.
3. Valid driver’s license and proof of automobile insurance.
4. Strong computer skills: fluency in Microsoft Office suite (including Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word).
5. Experience creating and conducting trainings and delivering presentations for a variety of audiences.
6. Successful completion of background clearance check.
7. Written and verbal proficiency in Spanish strongly preferred.
* An additional two years of experience working with youth can substitute for the degree requirement.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge, understanding and application of youth development principles, including the Search Institute’s 40 Developmental Assets.
2. Ability to interact effectively and seamlessly with youth and adults alike.
3. Excellent organization and planning skills (for internal and external activities).
4. Life experience reflecting or sensitivity to the experiences of rural, urban, immigrant, Latino and low-income youth.
5. Ability to use a variety of media to create materials for outreach, trainings and presentations.
6. Ability to work independently, as part of a team, and proactively problem-solve.
7. Interest and experience in public speaking and writing for a variety of audiences.
8. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups in a multicultural setting.
9. Demonstrated relationship building, networking and follow-up skills.
Location: Woodland
Compensation: Compensation is $18 per hour plus health benefits and accrual of five hours of paid time off per pay period.
