Sacramento ACT Meadowview Partnership Documentary

We, Leslie Granciano and Jessica Ramos, are sophomores at Luther Burbank High School. We are members of the Meadowview Partnership. We are 15 and 16 years old. We value our friends, family, our Mexican culture, and love to dance. As youth leaders in New Age Latinas, we work to improve our leadership skills and help other girls graduate from high school and go on to college. We represent New Age Latinas on the Burbank Youth Action Team where we research youth concerns and try to improve our school and create a place where students feel comfortable learning.

Lack of Role Models
As a result of a survey our Youth Action Team did of 170 students at Luther Burbank, we learned that many students don’t have a role model on campus. When students were asked to rate if they had at least one adult they felt comfortable with talking about personal issues, on a scale of one to four, 38% gave it the lowest rating of one and 30% gave it two. We didn’t know that there was a serious lack of role models! Role models contribute a lot to the decisions that youth make. For example if a person has been struggling in school but still makes it to college, it will make others confident that they will be able to make it too. We made this video to help youth and adults notice the impact that they have on others.

We would like to show this documentary at our high school to our principal, parents, students and staff. At our Changing the View: 2009 Meadowview Youth Leadership Conference we showed it to youth in our neighborhood. By using our documentary, we want to provide people with the information on how to become better role models and look into ways we can increase role models at Luther Burbank. We hope that the youth we interviewed will also think more about their own actions and think about ways that they can be role models for others.
