West Sacramento teens present Youth Voices for Change multimedia exhibit to community

July 2009

On June 30, the West Sacramento City Hall Galleria was filled with community members who came to show their support for local youth by participating in the Youth Voices for Change event. Members of the Sactown Heroes, a youth group of the West Sacramento Youth Resource Coalition, invited the public to their multimedia presentation, which included a web-based map, videos, photos and audio of the factors in West Sacramento that youth feel help or hinder their journey to adulthood, as well as what they would like to see changed in their community.

West Sacramento Mayor Christopher Cabaldon attended the event, as did Tony Wong from Assemblymember Mariko Yamada’s office. Newspaper and television reporters interviewed youth and adults involved in the project.

The Youth Voices for Change project is one component of the Healthy Youth/Healthy Regions initiative to document the connections between improvements in youth well-being and regional prosperity in the nine-county Sacramento capital region. The initiative is a collaborative partnership of Sierra Health Foundation, the UC Davis Center for Regional Change and The California Endowment, with additional funding from the California Council for the Humanities as part of its statewide California Stories Initiative.
